Science Teaching Channel
Acquiring scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding and skills to solve problems, through BSL, is a very important part of the work we do at Heathlands.
Our science channel is for pupils to share what they have learnt in science. They use British Sign Language to share scientific concepts and practical work to show what they know. Our science channel plays a very important role in promoting and sharing the use of specialist signs to enable pupils to give complex explanations in their own language they are learning. This is an aspect of deaf pedagogy which pupils bring to the creation of educational materials that are accessible for those who use British Sign Language.
Our science channel is a great educational resource. There are many topics covering Biology, Chemistry and Physics as well as projects, our pupils make learning fun and relevant. Video clips on GCSE required practical investigations are very useful for pre and post learning and teaching. Video clips produced by our students are fun to watch because they bring a subject to life in a way that textbooks in written English can’t. Video remains a powerful teaching aid to motivate and engage learners.
