Total Communication
Total Communication is a philosophy, not a method of communication.
It means we use various ways to communicate totally with each individual child. Heathlands’ Total Communication approach includes:
- British Sign Language
- Sign Supported English
- spoken English
- written English
- visual support for teaching (e.g. through ICT)
- lip-reading
- listening using hearing aids/ implants/ radio aids and sound field systems
This child centred approach allows children to become confident learners who are optimising their language skills.
