Curriculum Intent
At Heathlands Art & Design is recognised as a vital and integral part of student’s education and exemplifies some of the highest forms of human creativity.
The intent of the Art and Design curriculum is to engage, inspire and challenge students equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art.
The curriculum is designed and sequenced to provide opportunities to develop deep knowledge in a variety of mediums so that students can share and express their individual creativity. They are also enabled to make links with a wide spectrum of different types of art in society.
Art contributes to learners’ personal development in terms of creativity and independence and supports the development of skills in self-reflection. The art curriculum will develop learner’s critical abilities and understanding of their own and others’ cultural heritages through studying a diverse range of male and female artists and designers, including deaf artists, throughout history and from all over the world. This takes place with carefully thought-out sequences of lessons and experiences, enabling all pupils to reach their full potential and beyond.
Art, craft and design exemplify some of the highest forms of human creativity. Art and design engages, inspires and challenges pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment invent and create their own works of art.
Students follow the KS3 National Curriculum Programme of Study for Art. They are taught to develop their creativity and ideas, and expertise. They also develop a critical understanding of artists and designers forming judgements to inform their own work.
Students are taught a range of techniques to record their observations and to use these as a basis for exploring their own ideas. They learn to use a range of techniques and media, including the use of paint. They learn how to analyse and evaluate their work and also work of other students in order to strengthen the visual impact of their designs. Students also learn about the history of art, design and architecture.
