Speech Therapy

Speech and Language Therapy provision is tailored to each child’s individual communication needs thus maximising their communication potential within the school setting in both British Sign Language (BSL) and spoken English. The Speech and Language Therapists work closely with classroom staff to ensure a collaborative approach to communication throughout the school day and to ensure that language and communication are at the centre of each learning opportunity.

When children join Heathlands, their communication needs are assessed through formal procedures and/or ongoing evaluation to ensure each aspect of communication is observed. The Therapist will be assessing:

  • play skills
  • interaction skills with adults and other children
  • active listening and watching skills
  • the development of their language in British Sign Language (BSL) and spoken English
  • use of voice and accurate lip patterns
  • alternative and augmentative ways to support communication
  • feeding and swallowing skills (if required)
