Robins class this week

This week Robins went into town to ask people about their jobs and how they get to work. They used this information to create a bar chart on ways people get to work. They also looked at services within St Albans.
They continued improving their cricket skills this week by competing against each other using what they have learnt.
In Maths this week Year 4 have been learning how to plot points on a graph.
As part of the Geography work this term Robins had created a birthday card to send to David Attenborough, and he has responded to the birthday card this week.

For the last week of the half term after working hard with exam papers, Hoopoes Class hosted visiting students from Lithuania on Monday and went on a trip to the Kew Gardens on Wednesday.

During the week, they also planned, wrote and created a collection of stories for younger children.

Week beginning 12.5.25 & 19.5.25 English and Maths

In English we responded to the images on the cover and title pages. We then explored further the concept of Evolution and what it might mean in the context of this story.

Reading the first pages together we identified new vocabulary and were able to put these into their respective word classes.

Using word cards and blocks children explored the language further finding their own ways of categorising them.

In maths we are continuing to explore the relationship between multiplication and division.

Please support your children with the 2, 5 and 10 times table. Fluency in these will support their work in number.

Week Beginning 19.5.25

In Science this week we generated questions about the absorbency of different building materials, made predictions, carried out tests and recorded our observations.

We also separated a range of non building materials according to their ability to repel water, asking ‘Is it waterproof?’

Children enjoyed the introduction to this concept as peers were squirted with water and remained dry.

Week beginning 12.5.25 Science

This week in Science we talked about last weeks trip and asked:
What different materials are buildings made out of and why?
We then looked closer at a range of building materials.

We want to test the hypothesis: ‘Hard materials cannot absorb water’ and had a discussion about the different ways we could do this.

A tweet-rific week!

The children have been continuing learning about time but with a focus on ‘duration’. The children were jumping, running on the spot and sitting on the floor for a duration of time to try and help them understand the length of a second, 20 seconds, 30 seconds, a minute and over a minute! They loved it.

In English we wrote information about ‘What is a bird?’. They chose a bird of their choice to research facts about it.

This week was our class assembly where we shared our learning about the different birds we researched about.

The children have their homework books and reading books in their bags ready to be complete during their week off school. 😊

Thinking blocks

In English today the children used a picture stimulus and worked together in small groups to brainstorm ideas of what the character saw and felt when she was flying on a magic carpet, having escaped from a cage. They came up with a lot of creative noun phrases and then combined noun phrases and feelings in sentences to write text for that picture in the story. They worked together really well.

Lithuanian Visitors and Kew Gardens

Another busy week to end the half term in Cuckoos class! We started off the week by welcoming some students from a school in Lithuania. The children were very exited to meet them and tell them about life in the UK. At the end of the day, they enjoyed playing board games with their new friends!

We continued our scary stories this week, with a focus on setting descriptions in English. We used a new ‘hands on building tool’ to pull the ideas from our head and writing them on building blocks before writing our setting decriptions.

On Wednesday we visited Kew Gardens where we consolodated our learning on the South American rainforest. The children learnt about the types of plants that are found in the rainforest as well as experiencing the heat and humidity found there. The children were glad to get back to the UK spring temperatures. They also saw the worlds most rarest and most smelliest plant, but luckily for the group it isn’t due to flower (and stink) for the next couple of weeks! The Titan arum plant smells so bad that it is said to smell like rotten meat! It is so rare that it only opens every 7-10 years!

Swift Class have been very busy!

They had a special visitor on Monday afternoon – Miss Head, she taught them all about Deacons and Priests in RE.

The class really enjoyed the trip to Kew Gardens on Wednesday. They experienced real-life rainforests and felt what it was like to walk around them.

Bikes and Cars

It has been another busy week in Cuckoos class. In English we have been focusing on setting description and have been doing problems solving puzzles in Maths. In science we had a debate on whether the earth is flat or round.

The afternoons have been busier with half the class taking part in bikability and the other half creating a moving car in the DT workshop.

Reminder- Wednesday is the trip to Kew Gardens. Please remember hats, suncream, waterbottles and packed lunches. The payment link is still open on Arbor for those who still need to access it.
