In Science this week we generated questions about the absorbency of different building materials, made predictions, carried out tests and recorded our observations.
We also separated a range of non building materials according to their ability to repel water, asking ‘Is it waterproof?’
Children enjoyed the introduction to this concept as peers were squirted with water and remained dry.
This week in Science we talked about last weeks trip and asked:
What different materials are buildings made out of and why?
We then looked closer at a range of building materials.
We want to test the hypothesis: ‘Hard materials cannot absorb water’ and had a discussion about the different ways we could do this.
This week we went on a short trip to observe different types of buildings in our local area. We asked, what materials are they made of and why?
This week we talked about the difficult times many people had during the war and how people celebrated when fighting stopped in Europe.
In Art today Goldfinch and peacock class have been looking at artist David Hockney who was well known for his portrayal of water by using a different range of shades and colours. they used a different range of skills in order to make it appear like someone had “jumped” into the water.

Goldfinch and peacock class
This week in English, Peacock class have been continuing with the story ‘How to Find Gold’. Working in pairs, the children imagined what the dialogue might be between two characters and acted this out. They then used this role-play to help support their writing of a conversation between the two characters.
Also, reminder on Thursday 8th May, school will be celebrating VE Day. Children are welcome to come in to school dressed in clothes that match their national flag.
Today in PHSCE goldfinch and peacock classes have been learning about healthy and unhealthy life styles, they looked at a diary from someone who had an unhealthy lifestyle. both classes discussed what was unhealthy about it and talked about what they could change to be more healthy. e.g less sugar and more fruit.
Continuing the class topic of learning about the world, children in Goldfinch and Peacock class have been looking at the map in the hall and trying to find different continents and oceans. The children then played a game with the inflatable globe to check their understanding.
They have also started making their own globes using paper mache, which they will be painting and labelling over the next few weeks – updates to follow!
Year 2 have been exploring the properties of different types of kitchen paper. They made predictions about which would be the most absorbent and then carried out an investigation to test their hypothesis.
