Heathlands is a community Special School for Deaf children aged 3-16 maintained by Hertfordshire County Council with aspirations to provide 16+ education.
Heathlands acts as a regional resource centre and welcomes enquiries from parents across the UK. Applications are usually made through the child’s Local Authority but we welcome visits from parents/carers. If parents feel the school can meet the needs of their child they should consult with their LA who should then make an application to Herts. County Council.The cost of a placement at Heathlands is very competitive and is paid to the school by the child’s Local Authority.
Each Authority has its own views on the need for pupils to attend a school such as ours. As part of the formal assessment process the Local Authority where the child lives will assess the child’s needs and make a recommendation about a suitable school. They may also consider the needs of other learners and the appropriate use of resources.
Parents are entitled to express a preference for a Local Authority maintained school, like ours, to be named on their child’s statement or Education Health and Care Plan and Local Authorities will give due consideration to such requests within the framework of the SEN Code of Practice. Parents who would like their child to become a pupil at Heathlands but their Local Authority does not agree have a right to appeal through the Special Educational Needs and Disability Tribunal (SENDIST).

Rail services can take you into the heart of London in only 20 minutes and the expansion of flights from to Luton Airport to many parts of the UK and Europe make us the ideal location for a regional specialist resource. To date we have pupils from 28 different local authorities and offer weekly residential facilities which have been praised by Ofsted.
